Often, we hear the saying, “Follow your heart.”
In the world, this phrase is popular. They are words that drive people to pursue their dreams. They are words that encourage people to choose who they want to be with regardless of what anyone else thinks is right. They are words that lead people to believe what seems true to them.
The Bible says that the “The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked; Who can know it?” The heart is rebellious against the things of God. The heart chases after the things of the flesh. The heart, if not submitted to God, is headed towards death.
Five years ago, I followed my heart like there was no tomorrow. Everyone cheered me on as I pursued my dreams. I was with who I wanted to be with and did what I wanted to do. I believed that everyone held their own beliefs and I would find my own way to God.
You can guess what eventually happened…
I became very close to death. I nearly went to hell.
My dreams became nightmares. The man whom I was with passed away. My way; man’s way showed its true colors—it was dark; it was the way of death.
By the grace of God, Jesus rescued me. Though grief and sorrow filled my heart, God’s love demonstrated through the cross drew me to repentance. His love found, accepted, and started to change me from the inside out!
Ezekiel 11:18-21 says: Then I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within them, and take the stony heart out of their flesh, and give them a heart of flesh, that they may walk in My statutes and keep My judgments and do them; and they shall be My people, and I will be their God. But as for those whose hearts follow the desire for their detestable things and their abominations, I will recompense their deeds on their own heads,” says the Lord God.
When someone receives Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior, the Holy Spirit comes to dwell in them. We are born again, of God. He gives us the power to hunger for and obey His Word. As we grow in Christ, we are transformed into the new creations we are—In Him, we have new life.
As His people, we are called to put to death the deeds of the flesh and put on the Lord Jesus Christ. The flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit. We are encouraged to crucify our fleshly desires and obey God’s Word. For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace (Romans 8:6). We are instructed to die to self and live to Christ (Galatians 2:20).
Today, God reminds me that I must continue to hunger for and obey His Word, not my heart. If not, I will experience the consequences of my own sins. If I obey Him, I will be blessed.
Our hearts are never reliable. He is! His Heart—His true colors as they are revealed, are beautiful. They are colorful. His way is the way of life.
For creative hearts to truly display His glory—who He is to the world, we must first trust in and obey Him. His desires must become our desires. His Words must become our words. His mission must become our mission. His life must become our life. Over time, we can begin to reflect Him in all He calls us to be, do and create here.
